What is Intuitive Eating?

Intuitive Eating is an evidence-based framework for helping people with their feelings around food, body image, and movement. Most of us have been on some sort of a diet for as long as we can remember; even if not ‘officially’, the chances are we’ve been avoiding foods we really enjoy, or aren’t eating as much as we really need to feel satisfied. This can lead us into a cycle of restriction and binging or can cause us to feel anxious or stressed about eating in social situations or around particular foods.

We spend so much time in our heads, overthinking every food choice, or worrying if we have to ‘make up’ for that cookie by spending hours in the gym, punishing our bodies with exercise we don’t really like. We stress about our bodies and try and manipulate them into being smaller than they want to be - this is exhausting. It takes up so much of our energy that we have little time left to think about the things that are actually important to us.

Intuitive Eating is a process to help you get out of your head when it comes to food and body image, and instead tune into and trust the signals your body is sending.

It’s an approach to eating which fundamental basis lies in nourishment as a form of self-care rather than approaching eating from a place of control and restriction.

Intuitive eating has been shown to help improve body appreciation and satisfaction, attunement to hunger and fullness, self-regard and optimism, exercising for enjoyment and dietary variety. It can also help improve physiological markers of health like blood glucose control, cholesterol and blood pressure. Finally, it has been shown to reduce the binge/restrict cycle and help people move away from diets.

How does the programme work?

In the Reconnect programme I will be coaching you through 11 consultations.

We will work through the principles of Intuitive Eating. Following each consultation, you will receive a follow up report which outlines everything we discussed and includes homework tasks to complete between sessions as well as further support i.e book recommendations.

You will have access to chat support between sessions so that you feel supported throughout our time together.
